The earthquake which on January 26 2001 stroke the most western region of India occurred in an area which is known to have a significant seismic activity, located 200 kms near the western margin between Indian and Euro-Asian plates.
About seismicity:
In 1819, an earthquake probably of the same energy (M about 8) occurred, but it caused less damage and victims, due to minor concentration of people and buildings.
The affected area has been classified among those with highest seismic hazard in Indian sub-continent by the international project Global Seismic Hazard Assessment Program - GSHAP.
According to the official seismic zonation of India, the affected area is among those with highest seismic risk.
