Abstract

On May 29, 1995, 06:52 G.M.T., a Mi = 3.9 earthquake occurred in the western Sicily, reaching an intensity VI of the MSK scale in the Trapani area. The shock, located offshore 10 km southward of the Marettimo island (ING data: Lat 37°51' N; Long 12°09’ E) at a depth of about 5 km, was followed by some low intensity aftershocks (I = lll-IV MSK) felt at Trapani and surroundings. The earthquake caused slight damage in an area elongated about comprising Trapani, Marettimo, Erice and other nearby villages. The westernmost part of Sicily is characterised by a low seismicity level: historical known earthquakes occurred in this area in 1259, 1726 and 1979 and they damaged even more severely the city of Trapani.

On July 23, 1995, 18:44 G.M.T., a Mg = 4.3 earthquake hit the western sector of the Lipari Archipelago and reached grade VI of the MSK scale in the island of Filicudi, where slight damage occurred. The shock, located close to the north-eastern coast of the island (IIV-CNR data: Lat 38°.34 N, Long 14°.35 E) at a depth of about 3.6 km, represented the main event in a sequence of over 400 earthquakes which took place over a period of about two months. About 20 aftershocks were weakly felt (I = IITIV MSK) by the inhabitants of Filicudi on the days following the main event. Similar sequences affected this area in 1892 and 1894, but caused strongest damage at Filicudi (I = VII- VIII MSK).

This paper briefly describes the main macroseismic effects observed after the earthquakes. Intensity was assessed using both the MSK-81 and EMS-92 scales in order to compare the results.
