1998 was one of the most distinguishable years in this century as regards seismic activity in Slovenia. In total, the inhabitants of Slovenia felt at least 115 earthquakes, and the epicentres of only a few of these were not in Slovenia. The strongest earthquake in 1998 occured on 12 April at 10h 55m UTC (12.55 local time) in Krn Mountains, NW Slovenia.
Its Wood-Anderson magnitude was 6.0 and a maximum intensity of VII–VIII EMS-98 was observed in four villages.The strongest earthquake outside our borders was felt on 26 March at 16.26 UTC. Its focus was in Umbria in Central Italy, and its local magnitude, as calculated from the seismograms recorded in Ljubljana, was 5.1.
