Leydecker G., Brüning H.J., 1988. Ein vermeintliches Schadenbeben im Jahre 1046 im Raum Höxter und Holzminden in Norddeutschland. Über die Notwendigkeit des Studiums der Quellen historischer Erdbeben. Geol. Jahrbuch, Reihe E, 42, 119-125.
The written documentation on a presumedly very strong earthquake in 1046 AD, which was said to have destroyed more than 30 castles in the region of Hoxter and Holzminden in Northern Germany, is traced back through several references. It Is proved, that the note on the “Corveyer Ostertafeln” (from the years 822-1117) referring to this earthquake has been miscited and that, with great probability, the event took place in Northern Italy. These investigations demonstrate, that the research on historical earthquakes should use secondary literature very carefully.
